Set back off the corner of Veteran's Highway and Mississippi Avenue in Metairie near the Kenner city line a young Steve Kuhnau opened his small health foods shop in 1973. Students at nearby Chapelle High School made it a popular stop for what Mr. Kuhnau called a "Smoothie". By 1987, the business had grown to include other locations and Smoothie King Franchises Inc. was established.
