The Most Reverend Joseph Francis Rummel, S.T.D. was born on October 14, 1876 in Steinmauren, Germany.  His family moved to the United States in 1882, when he was a young child.  On May 24, 1902 Father Rummel was ordained in Rome.  Twenty-six years later, he was consecrated a Bishop on May 29, 1928 in New York and within months was installed as Bishop of Omaha, Nebraska (on July 4, 1928).  Bishop Rummel was Enthroned as Archbishop of New Orleans on May 15, 1935 and served until his death in 1964.Archbishop Rummel led the church and Catholic schools into racial desegregation. On September 9, 1962 Archbishop Joseph Francis Rummel High School in Metairie was dedicated by the Christian Brothers and the Archdiocese of New Orleans. Archbishop Rummel is buried in St. Louis Cathedral.

The Brothers of Christian Schools were founded in France during the 17th Century by Saint John Baptiste De La Salle.
