U. S. Mint The Directory notes that the Mint, then as now located on Esplanade Avenue at Decatur Street,
produced $4.4 million in gold and silver coins during 1857-1858. Opened in the 1830s, the New Orleans branch stopped producing
coins in 1909. The building was later used as a federal prison and is now part of the Louisiana State Museum's collection
of historic buildings in the Vieux Carre. http://www.nutrias.org/monthly/august2000/aug003.htm
