Eastern European Jews from Poland and Russia began to arrive in larger numbers after the
Civil War. They formed a community in the Dryades Street neighborhood, forming small congregations, some of which
later joined to become Beth Israel in 1909. Anshe Sfard
(United Brotherhood of the Sephardic Rite), formed in 1896, remains in the Dryades Street neighborhood today. http://209.85.165.104/search?q=cache:gjUBYF9UPpwJ:www.consulfrance-nouvelleorleans.org/IMG/doc/Talk_for_EdCohn_1_-2.doc+%22new+orleans%22+%22+in+1909%22&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=69&gl=us --- St
